about

This was the second song for our album, I had this before my musical retreat in Asia. This started by my asking Rhesa, "hey bro, write me a Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Nine song from Band on the Run." How easy is that, I got this song by asking in one sentence.

I heard the hook immediately and title, I had nothing. What in the world is "Quarter Past Midnight" I thought? Also it was hard to write differing melody lines on similar chords to start and also rock it. Wow, I asked for this? What was I thinking? Being this was like the first real song I could emulate Beatle references I used the diverse arrangement given to me and strengthened it with "Mr. Kite, McCartney references like Back in the USSR and Live and Let Die ending".

When I went to sing it my friends Jeff and Dan both came into the singing room looking at me baffled. They never heard me sing rock before. I knew I could do it I just never wanted to, but they both said, keep what you are doing and Jeff even said, you are a natural. I'm like cool, thanks, but knowing ballads is still my forte. It was a last of the day sing as to thrash your voice is a prerequisite for getting a good performance.

OK, what in the world does this song mean? We live in a dying world folks, right now it seems. Quarter Past Midnight to me represents the doomsday clock where things go very bad at midnight. We are half past that now and I pray we turn back the hands of time.
